Babushka Adoption (BA) Foundation was established in 1999 with financial support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The financial support provided by SDC came to an end in 2006. Since then Babushka Adoption Foundation has worked as an independent, sustainable, non-profit, local charity NGO.
Babushka Adoption Foundation aims to give hope and restore dignity to the elderly, a vulnerable group who have been particularly affected by the socio-economic crisis in Kyrgyzstan after the collapse of the USSR. The elderly in Kyrgyzstan have suffered most from the 'transition' to a market economy with the wholesale collapse of social services and the widespread migration of the working age population to Russia and other neighbouring countries to seek employment.
Life is especially difficult for those who have lost their family members and have no family network to support them. This is an increasing phenomenon with so many young people leaving the country in search of better employment opportunities abroad.
Many old people feel insecure and disillusioned by the changes in the last 15 years that have made their lives so much harder and more unpredictable. They find themselves in an extremely miserable situation and some are even at risk of dying from hunger and starvation. Babushka Adoption Foundation helps such hardship cases by providing direct financial, social and educational support.
