Sponsorship or “adoption” is our primary method of helping the elderly people in the Kyrgyz Republic because we have found that pairing a babushka (grandmother) or dedushka (grandfather) with a sponsor is the most effective way to provide stable, ongoing benefits and services to the elderly.
The elderly people selected for this programme have government pensions that are less than their minimum cost of living and as a result they live in desperate conditions without close relatives or any extra sources of income. The identification, assessment and selection of the most vulnerable older people in need of urgent support are carried out by our social workers in consultation with the team of Babushka Adoption.
Babushka Adoption Foundation disburses €10 per month to the adopted babushkas and dedushkas as a supplement to their pension. This cash transfer goes a long way, enabling the elderly to heat their homes, purchase medications and live a better life. Furthermore, Babushka Adoption Foundation also works to establish a personal relationship between you and your adopted beneficiary, easing their feelings of loneliness and social isolation. Our staff members translate letters, distribute presents and even help sponsors to visit their adopted babushka or dedushka.
Adopting a babushka or dedushka in Kyrgyz Republic for one year costs €150. From this annual amount, €10 monthly is distributed directly to the babushka or dedushka during 12 months. The remaining funds, €30, are used for the implementation of the social projects, such as our: “Home Visiting Service”, providing care to the older people in the household, support of older people with food packages, supply of walking aids, different kinds of humanitarian aid, bedding and clothing, support of older peoples’ self help activities, and running the resource centers for older people in Batken region. From this money we pay salaries for social workers who conduct a needs assessment of the older people, deliver sponsors’ money, parcels and letters; office staff who translate profiles and letters, and expenses such as postal and internet communication with sponsors, fuel and utilities.
